Week 14 5X5

What went right and what went wrong in Week 14 for the Big 12

  • Jesse Ertz and Justin Silmon continued the rushing onslaught that Kansas State has used so effectively towards the end of the season. Ertz had 170 yards on 19 carries with a touchdown while Silmon had 133 yards on 22 carries with 2 touchdowns. Silmon also continues the recent trends of another man up that we’ve seen in the Kansas State backfield as he only had 54 carries on the season heading into this game.
  • Justin Crawford ran for 209 yards on 28 carries. This was his second 200+ yard effort on the season and put him over 1,000 yards on the year. Coach Holgerson has a good one to work with moving forward. Also wanted to give a shout out to the West Virginia fan base for giving Skyler Howard a solid send off on Senior night and congratulations to Coach Holgerson on the new 5 year extension.
  • Baker Mayfield had a huge game for the Sooners in their Big 12 title clinching victory over Oklahoma State. He finished 13-19 for 288 yards and 3 touchdowns on the day but it was his ability to extend plays that led to the big plays in the passing game.
  • Samaje Perine had a huge game for the Sooners and really you could say a huge half. After a slow start to the game Perine finished with 37 carries for 239 yards and 1 touchdown. To me this punishing run game was the ultimate difference in the game as it eventually wore the Cowboys defense down after they had shut the Sooners run game down for much of the first half.
  • Jordan Stearns had a huge game for the Cowboys in his last Bedlam game finishing with 19 tackles.

  • TCU’s defense had another rough game stopping the run allowing the Wildcats to rush for 336 yards two weeks after allowing 334 yards to Oklahoma State. With his defensive background I’m sure this has been particularly hard to swallow for Coach Patterson.
  • Zach Smith seems to have a bright future running the Baylor offense. This game showed that he has a way to go with only completing 15 of 31 attempts and turning the ball over 4 times (2 interceptions and 2 fumbles). He is a competitor so I expect he will get better once he has a chance to learn the new offense of whomever Baylor elects to hire for their next Head Coach.
  • Coach Gundy’s conservative game plan. There were several times in the game that called for the Cowboys to be aggressive and for some reason that aggressiveness wasn’t there once again. To not try for points after the big Barry J Sanders kickoff return was particularly inexcusable to me. Until Coach Gundy starts to play to win against the Sooners instead of playing not to lose it is going to be hard for the Cowboys to win Bedlam.
  • Mason Rudolph had arguably his worst game as a Cowboy in one of the biggest games of his career. The field conditions weren’t great but Baker Mayfield had to play in the same conditions and was able to have success. Rudolph in his career has struggled on the road and that trend continued with him completing only 11 of 25 attempts for 186 yards.
  • Oklahoma continued its recent trend of injuries with Dede Westbrook, Jordan Parker, Joe Mixon, and Samaje Perine all be injured at points in the game. Mixon and Perine were able to return and play through their injuries. Needless to say the time off before the bowl game will be used to get as healthy as much as for preparation for their opponent.
